In the north of Tanzania lies the Serengeti National Park. The name is derived from the Masai word “siringet” which means “the place where the land runs on forever”. How romantic is that? This vast area between the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria with an invisible border with the Masai Mara has been much loved by intrepid luxury safari goers and writers from days gone by and fits the East African stereotype when it comes to vast rolling plains, rivers and huge horizons.

On a Serengeti safari you will explore open plains teeming with wildebeest, zebra and all the other plains game during the annual migration – this creates a hunting bonanza for the big cats which often makes for exhilarating game drives. In the Northern Serengeti the landscape is dotted with kopjes – isolated rock hills – which give lion the perfect viewing platform to consider what they shall have for their lunch that day! Safaris here are fantastic during the migration but also heaven in ‘low season’ which has excellent weather and absolutely no people.

This area of East Africa is one of the best places to see cats even when the Migration is not here. In fact, this probably offers an even better safari experience as there are fewer people and even the animals seem more settled – life in the Serengeti carries on at a gentler pace at this time of year.

Here at The Luxury Safari Company we can offer some of the best luxury safari camps and lodges, often in remote parts of the Serengeti which ensures our guests can experience the very best the Serengeti can offer i.e. excellent game viewing and no people. We specialise in luxury tented camps, some permanent, some mobile, located in stunning scenery, excellent food and the genuine warmth of the Tanzanian people.

Whether you choose a luxury mobile camp or a more permanent camp you can be sure that The Luxury Safari Company will have unrivalled knowledge and, depending on the time of year, we often have fantastic special offers. The luxury mobile camps offer an amazing degree of comfort and luxury given that they move during the year in order to follow the Migration. They leave no footprint when they move and you can to enjoy the best of the wildlife, delicious food, great guiding and remote and private locations within the National Park, or just outside it in private concessions. Amongst our favourites would be Serian Serengeti and Ubuntu. Serian Serengeti has just eight tents and is set up in the best possible locations for witnessing the Migration. This is the sister camp to Alex Walker’s Serian in Kenya and will give you a truly authentic luxury safari experience. Ubuntu camp has six tents and the wonderful guiding here will ensure you have a mind blowing Migration experience.

If you are travelling with your family or a group of friends there are some wonderful options such as Mkombe’s House and Serengeti Under Canvas. Mkombe’s House is situated in the Lamai area of the Serengeti and with five rooms and a pool and stunning interiors together with exceptional views -what better way to enjoy each other’s company? Serengeti Under Canvas is the most luxurious of the mobile camps, but having it all to yourself is truly unforgettable!

The opening of Namiri Plains in July 2014 was very exciting for the whole safari industry. This luxury six tented camp is situated in a private concession which has been closed for twenty years while Frankfurt Zoo carried out a big cat research project. To stay here now means you can immerse yourself in the bush with zoologists and researchers and gain a real insight into how the whole ecosystem works.

The Grumeti Reserves are situated in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti and offer a choice of super luxury accommodation for the very discerning luxury safari client.
