Zanzibar
ZANZIBAR LOCATION: Island off the East Coast of Tanzania, North of Dar es Salaam
CLIMATE: Hot all year, but monsoon during Apr, May and Nov
TYPICAL LANDSCAPE: Small Island with Swahili and Arabic architecture, spice fields, jungle and small islands off the coast of Zanzibar – white sand, gin clear Indian Ocean
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania – Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean is just 25-50 kilometres off the coast of Tanzania and comprises numerous small beautiful tropical islands, and two large ones (Unguja (also known as Zanzibar) and Pemba). Zanzibar was once a separate state until it joined Tanganyika in 1964, Zanzibar has previously had a long trading history with the Arab world, whose influence can be seen in the stunning Arabic architecture, and the fact that Zanzibar is still largely a muslim state.
Stone Town, Zanzibar’s capital and a World Heritage site, is a bustle of markets, small winding streets, mosques and small boutiques, and is an absolute must see. The white soft sand, and crystal clear azure water of the Indian Ocean truly is paradise, and there is a plethora of luxury lodges and hotels to relax in after your safari in Kenya or Tanzania. Getting married on Zanzibar is popular, since it is easy to arrange, why not take a small boutique hotel exclusively for your friends and family.
Also ideal for families and those more active, due to the variety of activities on offer, including sailing, swimming with dolphins, and some of the best diving in the world. Zanzibar and Mafia Island are often called the Spice Islands, and a spice tour on either island is definitely worthwhile. No more than one hour’s drive from one end of Zanzibar to the other, this stunning island is a tropical paradise just over an hour from Nairobi, and fifteen minutes from Dar es Salaam.
The Zanzibar Archipelago boasts some of the best diving in the world, with PADI dive centres dotted all over the Island, so wherever you stay you will receive professional instruction, and are able to complete PADI dive courses.
The Luxury Safari Company’s favourite lodges and hotels on Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba are Fundu Lagoon (Pemba), Mnemba Island, Baraza and Kilindi – these all combine beautifully as a safari and beach holiday, with luxury tailor-made safari options in Kenya (Masai Mara, Samburu, Laikipia… and much more) and Tanzania (Selous, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and much more).
