Sujan The Serai
What we love: the Sujan experience in the desert.
The Sujan brand, set up by passionate conservationists, Jaisal and Anjali Singh, has become synonymous with the creation of unique camps and one glorious hotel in Rajasthan. The Sujan family have a long connection with this area and have maintained close working relationships with the local people that they first met on their visit to this area in 1971. A connection that Sujan are rightly proud of.
Established in 2008, this extraordinary desert camp is set on a one hundred acre private estate in the Thar Desert an hour from Jaisalmer. Inspiration was drawn from the royal Rajputana caravan sites and local craftsman carved sandstone walls, plunge pools and an inverted stepwell on which lies the inviting swimming pool. Evenings spent under the vast desert sky listening the haunting and ancient songs of the Manganiyar folk musicians will create memories that will last for ever. The camp evokes both the desert landscape and the spirit of Jaisalmer in its design. The vivid colours of Rajasthan are introduced on cushions, throws, and turbans. Sitting on sandstone plinths are 21 spacious tents, including 14 tented suites, 6 luxury suites and one Royal suite. The luxury suites have their own private walled gardens and sunken, heated plunge pools. The Royal suite is set in its own private walled enclosure and has dining and sitting tents, its own Spa and a private heated swimming pool. A personal butler will cater to your every need. All the tents have been stylishly decorated and furnished by Anjali Singh and it is in the detail that these tents stand out. Picnic hampers with water and cold drinks, butler’s bells beside your bed, writing desks and clay laundry baskets all add to the feeling of modern and ancient blending together perfectly. The wonderful staff combine privacy and attention seamlessly.
Dining can be in the dining room or staff are happy to set up a table anywhere on site. The food is delicious, seasonal and reflects the cuisine of the area with western options. Most of the ingredients are home grown and organic.
Experiences include visits to the 12thcentury Jaisalmer with its Golden Fortress and shopping in the bazaars accompanied by an experienced guide. Sand dune sundowners are a must and many other activities can be arranged.
